Wanaque School
PTA Meeting
April 23, 2012
Meeting called to order at 7:05pm.
MAM: Welcome and thank you for coming tonight,
I would like to take a moment to review and approve last month’s minutes with the correction on the last page, the date for this meeting was incorrectly noted as February 6, 2012 and it is actually today, March 5, 2012;
Motion to approve: Anne P.
2nd: Heather
With no opposition, the PTA unanimously approves the minutes from March 5, 2012.
We would now like to hear from some of our guests, first Ms. Morales.
MAM: Ms. Morales could not join us tonight but she wanted me to remind everyone that NJASK testing begins next week for the next 3 weeks, please be sure your kids are on time, well fed and rested.
Rob Adams: Good to see everyone. Happy to announce the superintendent search is over and though I cannot make the announcement now, we will be introducing our new superintendent tomorrow night at 7pm at Haskell School. There will be a breakfast sometime in May for everyone to have a chance to meet this person. There is also a Community Outreach meeting Wednesday at 7:30pm in this library. Thanks to everyone for your help with the search. We are anxious to get our new superintendent out there and meeting people.
Teachers: Want to express our thanks to the PTA for all that you do for us and the kids. We always know who to go to if we need something done. It is also great to see familiar faces every time we come, shows us you are committed.
Officer Reports:
President - MaryAnn: teacher appreciation week is coming up, starts May 7th with the actual day on the 8th. We will have a luncheon for the teachers on the 8th, if you can help let us know. Also, the curtains on the stage are looking very worn and torn. Three side panels need to be repaired for sure. The cost for this is $2100. We have decided that this will be our gift to the school this year. If there are any other thoughts, please speak to me off line.
1st VP - Chris: There is a Pizza 1 fundraiser on the 8th, they will give us 10% of all receipts from 5-10pm so plan on pizza for dinner that Tuesday!
2nd VP - Jason: Comic Book Club is doing well, though attendance is low, it is a new club and the first project had some great results. (Jason displayed the work of a student who completed the first project)
Treasurer - Wendy: Nothing to report.
Corresponding Secretary - Karen: We received a Thank You card from the following:
Mrs. Pantano
Mrs. Horst for the Seuss flowers
Mrs. Kenyon for school supplies
Recording Secretary - Yvette: Nothing to report.
Standing Committee Reports
Drama - 2nd - 4th Lisa S.: Show was amazing; the kids worked so hard and loved having the support of their friends. If you can bring your kids to the shows, do it, they love to see their friends in the audience.
Drama 5th - 8th – AMF.: Remember Avenue Q is this weekend at 7pm Friday and Saturday. We are in Tech week and everything is going great. The sets and the props are fabulous. There are lots of great themes addressed, bullying, fitting in, etc. There is great music, it is appropriate for all so come out and support them.
Cultural Arts – Chris S.: Our last assembly of the year will be 6/11 called “Physics is Fun” for 5th and 6th graders then another session for 7th and 8th grade directly after. We learned a lot this year and will use that learning for planning next year for sure.
Box Tops for Education - Wendy: We are expecting a check mid May and have decided to do one final submission on June 1st so get those last minute box tops and labels in.
Bingo - Anne P: Last Bingo will be June 1 – same day as Field Day so it will be a busy day but lots of fun!
Tricky Tray: Sue M: We brought in $20,590, we spent $7,397 so our profit is $13,193 – not bad at all! We are already scheduled for next year, March 23 at Lakeland!
Reading Program – Kathy D.: This Thursday is the 1st and 2nd grade PJ Party. The kindergarten will have theirs on 5.18. We would like more readers for each of these events – please let Kathy D. know if you can help.
Field Day – Tracy G.: T-shirt sale is going well. We are also going to make pennants – they were just too expensive to buy so we are going to be creative and make them. We are also looking to buy a banner to mirror the one we have.
Q: Can we buy new water jugs? The ones we have are very old and dirty.
A: Let’s look into getting them donated and if not we can vote on new ones at the next meeting.
School Apparel – Sue B: We need to request a motion to increase the budget for School Apparel by $400 – remember this is not a fundraiser; we bring in what we put out.
Motion: Anne P.
2nd: Sue M.
Market Day – Jen S.: Our last check was for $186.18 – great job! I have had a rep meeting for next year. We are trying to get some kits out to the new kindergarten parents to introduce them to the program from the start. The cost is $5 for 25 kits so it would be about $20 to do this and it is great advertising. I am having the rep come to discuss a table at back to school night where we could sample some of the foods and build business.
Fundraising – Sue M..: We did better than expected with Gertrude Hawke, made over $1500. We will be attending the lunch at the Brownstone to see what is new for the next school year.
Egg Hunt – Tina J.: Had over 100 kids and lots of fun. There were tons of prizes and games. Weather was not the best but we had a great turnout anyway. We need to have a discussion with the Reserve as there was some discussion about them inviting their grandchildren who are not necessarily from the area, however the town contributes $600 towards the event and they feel the Reserve should be included – needs to be talked through for numbers and ideas.
Nominating Committee – Lisa S.: Nominations for the 2012-2013 school year are as follows:
2nd VP – Jason V. and Tina Johannamen
Recording Secretary – Yvette S. unopposed
Treasurer – Sharon Birkenbush - unopposed
Committee members are:
Lisa S.
Linda M.
Jen R.
Jen S.
Sue M.
Voting will take place at our next meeting. Since we must allow 20 days for people to challenge a candidate or enter another name, we will have to move our meeting to May 14. Voting will be by ballot – please remember you are not permitted to vote if you are not a paid member of the PTA.
Old Business
New Business
MAM: The girls’ locker room is in desperate need of clean up. Most of the clutter in there belongs to the PTA in one form or another. I will need some help so if you can volunteer, we can discuss dates.
Lisa K: I would love to do an egg hatching project, I met a man with an Emu farm and he would love to work with us. This will have to be discussed with Ms. Morales as in the past, allergies and other issues have prevented us from having live animals in the school.
Julie C. and Lisa A.: We would like to do a 5th grade fun night on May 11th. We have the date all set and all things in order, just thought we would approach the PTA with a request for $250 to offset the cost of refreshments. The event is from 3:30 until 7:30pm and includes volleyball, pizza, water, a move and popcorn.
Motion: Julie C.
2nd: Lisa A.
With no opposition, 5th grade fun night will be funded by the PTA in the amount of $250
I also have information about a fund raiser where Mobile Gold will come do a party where they buy your old gold, cash on the premises and give 10% back to the school. We would need to have 3 volunteers as tellers.
MAM: If there is no other business, our next meeting will be May 14, 2012 at 7pm right here in the library.
Motion to adjourn until May 14, 2012
Motion: Anne P.
2nd: Tracy G.
With no opposition, the PTA has approved this meeting adjourn until May 14, 2012
